Going Back<\/strong><\/p>\n

We say we\u2019re going back
\nto see family and friends
\nvisit the old country. What we do
\nis make pilgrimage to places
\nthat knew us when we were young,
\nplaces that witnessed our coming of age
\nwhen we were small and the world was
\nthis huge affair we wanted a piece of.<\/p>\n

Much of what we travel far to see
\nagain and again, is long gone,
\nalready was becoming a dead form
\neven while it was forming us,
\nexisting now only in memory.
\nAll we ever see these days is
\na shadow of what once was everything.
\nWe are always surprised at the shrinkage,
\nat how the whole world keeps diminishing
\nand how we keep growing smaller.<\/p>\n

Isolation<\/strong><\/p>\n

She lived her last years
\nresigned to bitter isolation
\nhaving gradually lost
\nher sight and hearing and
\nall her six boys to America.<\/p>\n

Still had her husband
\nPartner for this hard lifetime
\n\u2013in spite of the falling darkness
\nshe still kept house for him\u2013 she also
\nhad her two loving daughters nearby,
\nbut missed the boys terribly.<\/p>\n

Close to the end she could only
\nimagine hearing their voices
\nwhen they would call from overseas;
\neven that much made her happy.<\/p>\n

Doubting the Word<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we doubt the name, on what foundation
\ncan we then build a language we can trust?\u201d
\nHe asks [we\u2019re having this conversation
\nin absentia, he just doesn\u2019t know it yet],
\nor if you can\u2019t trust the word [what then?].
\nWell, isn\u2019t that the point? That you can\u2019t quite
\ntrust the word, meaning always keeps shifting
\nand language evolves. Have to keep on
\nmaking it all up as we go, again and again.
\nSometimes getting it right and sometimes
\n[especially when lucky, or crafty, or modern]
\nby getting it wrong undoing a Gordian Knot.
\nWe translate from then to now, knowing
\nall translation is only approximation at best.
\nWe receive the word, any word, even \u2018the word\u2019
\nperhaps on faith, somewhat at face value and
\npass it through the alembic of personal experience
\nkeeping in mind the inevitable discount. We try to
\nget back to first writings, to get to an original
\ntherefore sterling meaning, the very word \u2018try\u2019
\nimplying actually a getting to is nearly impossible
\nat least in the kind of verbal formula(tion)
\n[Achiles and the tortoise all over again].
\nIt\u2019s either the word [work?] of the one God
\nor the polytheism of multiple versions
\nthe infinity of that house of mirrors and
\nif indeed this is about meaning, how can we
\nseriously talk about meaning in this fractal world?<\/p>\n
