When you\u2019ve thrown up a dozen times,<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll find the impulse subsides \u2013 you can sit for hours<br \/>\nwith a knuckle softly pressed inside your head,<\/p>\n<p>watching rolling news of the war. Insert spoons,<br \/>\nknitting needles, a length of plumber\u2019s pipe.<br \/>\nStare at the ceiling, your jaw loose as a gorging<br \/>\npython\u2019s, and try to conjure those shocks that pass<\/p>\n<p>through the body, but leave it intact \u2013 the rasp of panicked<br \/>\nbreath, the whump of a nearby explosion, a scream.<br \/>\nOr think of the soldier who coughed up a sleeping bullet,<br \/>\nshrapnel burrowing out of a human thigh<\/p>\n<p>to freedom. By then you\u2019ll be ready to take a blunted<br \/>\nbayonet, silver and slick with spit. Arrange<br \/>\nyour body around that deathly spindle,<br \/>\nrepeat to yourself \u2013 I am unharmed.
