Just show up, he said, no need for personal invitation. So, still uncertain of his standing, he arrives the day before at the gymnasium. Only a single man happens to be there, one who had been friendly in the past. He tells him, I would like to participate again, would I be able to, again this time, just like before? I don\u2019t know, the man says, it\u2019s not up to me, you know. He\u2019s hedging, visibly uncomfortable, obviously put in a difficult position.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Well, the organizers tell him next morning, no problem, jump right in, by all means. This once. What they actually say is, \u201cGreat, you are providential, just what we needed to complete the team, although, strictly speaking, this is an invitation-only tournament.\u201d That last bit is reiterated and underlined again at the opening ceremonies. Just for his benefit, he thinks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n They\u2019re very deferential and polite but the awkwardness is palpable. This is not really their fault, he reasons, even though, arguably, something else might be, (actually IS). Obviously, he was not expected and he feels superfluous and excluded.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He plays a few bouts at the exercises, does a few workouts with the equipment, alone at the gym in the midday heat, when everybody else is upstairs taking a nap. He\u2019s making up for time soon-to-be-lost; he does not mind, happy to have the chance, for he does love the game.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the evening the main events take place in the usual format: two or three by turn present an account of their new moves in the two separate sets of rules. Afterwards there\u2019s some jousting, the praises, appraisal and appreciation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [And why should they? He\u2019s got no proper sheepskins to show for, no public recognition, only a minor distinction (as yet, as he keeps telling himself.)
