Ναυάγιο στα ανοιχτά του Ηρακλείου
Δυό θάλασσες τα χρόνια μας
ατέρμονες, αμείλικτα φωτάκια
μοναξιάς, φάροι αδέσποτοι
στην λύσσα των κυμάτων,
πλοία παιχνίδια του Αιόλου,
του Ερμή, του Ποσειδώνα∙
η γη να σειέται και η θάλασσα
ζεστή αγκαλιά για τα οστά μας.
Αὕτη ἡ θάλασσα, ἡ μεγάλη καὶ
εὐρύχωρος, χνώτο καυτό, αιώνιο,
δείχνει τα δόντια ανοιχτά, έτοιμα
κι αδηφάγα. Πόσες αρμάδες πέζεψαν
σε τούτα τα νερά; Πόσες αρμάδες
χόρτασαν την πείνα της Γοργόνας;
Πόσοι και πόσοι πέρασαν και
τρύγισαν τον πλούτο των κυμάτων;
Μίνωες, Κρήτες, Πελασγοί, οι
στεριανές Μυκήνες, το μένος το
υδάτινο της Θήρας, ο στόλος που
ξεστράτισε των Αχαιών, ο νόστος
των ηρώων, τα φύλα που ξεχείλισαν
από την μάνα-μήτρα, οι Πέρσες και
οι Έλληνες στο μαύρο τους κατόπι,
κι ύστερα οι Αττικοί κι οι Λάκωνες
κι οι Μακεδόνες, κι άλλοι πολλοί
που δεν χωρούν σ’ αυτήν την νύχτα.
Κι η αλισάχνη που χαϊδεύει το στερέωμα,
γλυκοξυπνά τον ήλιο, χάραξε η ανατολή.
Πνιγόμαστε.
τουλάχιστον λουσμένοι στης αυγής
το φως, αφήνουμε το στίγμα μας,
στερνή εικόνα:
εσύ κι εγώ βουλιάζοντας
στα βάθη της αβύσσου
να μελετάμε τον καιρό
των θαλασσοκρατόρων.

Death at sea: Iraklio
Two seas our ages
endless, implacable lights
of solitude, stray lighthouses
in the furor of the waves,
ships are Aeolus’s toys,
Hermes’s, Poseidon’s;
the earth trembles and the sea
is a warm embrace for our bones.
The great wide sea
hot breath, eternal,
shows open teeth, ready
and gluttonous. How many fleets disembarked
in these waters? how many fleets
filled the Gorgon’s hunger?
How many how many passed by and
trod the wealth of the waves?
Minoans, Cretans, Pelasgians,
land-dwelling Myceneans, the watery
anger of Thera, the Achaean fleet which
lost its way, the return
of the heroes, the tribes which flowed
out of womb-mother, the Persians and
the Greeks on their black pursuit
and later the Attic and Lacedaemonian
and Macedonians, and the many others
who did not fit into that night.
And the spray which caresses the firmament,
sweetly wakes up the sun, draws up dawn.
We are drowning.
At least dawn light
bathes us, we leave behind our location
final image:
you and I sinking
into the depth of the abyss
thinking the time
of the rulers of the sea.
