Work from Paros Poetry and Translation Symposium 2019: Angelos Sakkis
Not for the talking
I
neither for listening to another human being
talk back to you. He never had much use for
conversation. He was more of the silent kind;
she definitely was not, and that’s another thing.
Besides, their talk was often at cross purposes.
What it was all about then was the touch,
pure, mute, animal touch; not necessarily
the touch of the animal within, although that
occasionally did occur and it was great
when it did, but speechless skin-to-skin contact,
the need of both to touch and to be touched,
akin to an autistic need for some impersonal,
uncomplicated, disembodied body pressure.
A kind of centering; assurance at a cellular
level that all is well with the world,
when obviously precious little ever is.
II
She used to make her declaration to him
often, still does, and he would not
offer it back, although he knew
it was expected, required even; but
that particular word sequence held
no currency with him, carried no charge;
it was mouthing words, a kind of lying.
He had resented having to go through it all,
under duress, to keep her happy. See? All’s well.
It wasn’t that he felt no feelings, but
in his mind the words just didn’t measure up,
they stayed dangling, unconnected, false;
opaque formulations in some unknown tongue.
III
And so it has always been a mystery to him:
How can smart women rely so much
on mere words!? Such a dependence!…
You want to yell to them:
Forget what I don’t say,
Just listen to what I do!

I
συζητήσεις. ήταν πάντα από τους σιωπηλούς τύπους ;
είχε ισοτιμία, δεν αξιολογούνταν;
αιωρούνταν ασύνδετες, λανθασμένες;
III

The tournament
A previous organizer had assured him it would be fine. Just show up, he said, no need for personal invitation. So, still uncertain of his standing, he arrives the day before at the gymnasium. Only a single man happens to be there, one who had been friendly in the past. He tells him, I would like to participate again, would I be able to, again this time, just like before? I don’t know, the man says, it’s not up to me, you know. He’s hedging, visibly uncomfortable, obviously put in a difficult position.
Well, the organizers tell him next morning, no problem, jump right in, by all means. This once. What they actually say is, “Great, you are providential, just what we needed to complete the team, although, strictly speaking, this is an invitation-only tournament.” That last bit is reiterated and underlined again at the opening ceremonies. Just for his benefit, he thinks.
They’re very deferential and polite but the awkwardness is palpable. This is not really their fault, he reasons, even though, arguably, something else might be, (actually IS). Obviously, he was not expected and he feels superfluous and excluded.
He plays a few bouts at the exercises, does a few workouts with the equipment, alone at the gym in the midday heat, when everybody else is upstairs taking a nap. He’s making up for time soon-to-be-lost; he does not mind, happy to have the chance, for he does love the game.
In the evening the main events take place in the usual format: two or three by turn present an account of their new moves in the two separate sets of rules. Afterwards there’s some jousting, the praises, appraisal and appreciation.
[And why should they? He’s got no proper sheepskins to show for, no public recognition, only a minor distinction (as yet, as he keeps telling himself.) In the assembly that first evening the man actually asks him “Are you an athlete?” the word “even” hanging in the air. He gives an oblique response, plainly dodging the question.]
Eventually he departs from the tournament at mid-course, as planned—mis-planned, he had originally thought, but as it turns out, just in time—before completely wearing out his thin welcome, possibly given grudgingly, but given just the same. And, certainly, before forging (or forcing?) any new and real connections. In parting, all the proper noises are made, impeccably performed by all.

Wool-gathering on the Dock of the Bay
Sunday at the usual café. Writing
about the weather. What he’s eating.
What happened yesterday.
The strange (and nasty) dreams last night.
How quickly time goes by.
What he’s been reading lately.
Some secretarial busywork
tasks to attend to, things to do, and why.
Either way… But rather not.
Instead, more reading.
Or the Sunday Crossword.
Later. After it’s all done.
Of people who aren’t here.
Of people seen here before, at other times.
Of people seen elsewhere.
People in general.
Something he’s read about the mind.
(Of it being skittish like a monkey,
at times inebriated
jumping around from tree to tree.)
(Some Free-Association,
everything being related to everything else.)
(Something the guru from the seventies
had said, but let’s not start on that.)
And why can’t he do this at home?
Either the reading or the writing?
As if the I reflecting is not there there.
Encountered only elsewhere.
In public places and cafes.
In trains, boats and airplanes.
All modes of public transportation.
In airports and waiting rooms.
In transit generally.
Also in solitary diner tables.
Anywhere else but home.
[This area of specificity and exactness
he finds rarely used in everyday speech,
that area of vocabulary anchoring vagueness
giving specific shape to formlessness.]
Then there’s the sport of people-watching
and that certainly can’t be done at home.
The game of seeing woman as a man,
man as a woman with
facial features read as character.
Color of eyes being irrelevant.
The length and style of hair beside the point.
Gender taken entirely out of the equation.
And always the possibility of
a friend suddenly turning up
totally unexpected, even if one
just wishes it or might half-expect it.
And why not? It has happened before!

The Room
I shut myself in the room again
with childhood friends and old Pireas
Vassiliou and Tsarouchis’ paintings
clandestine strolls in Piraiki,
(But we used to sing then. What happened?)
Boredom at the Division in Hania
the vivid color of the sea sometimes.
The old grocery store weighing-scale
appears on the counter and over there
hung by a nail on the wall the lacquered bread
from the wedding where I was best man
is eaten by bugs, finally tossed away.
Then father wearing suit and tie
sits at the table with the Sunday paper
coffee and cookies, scanning the obits
–Do you remember so-and-so?
–Who? mother asks from the kitchen
–The one doing this-and-that
when we were doing that other thing?
–Ah, yes. –Well then, long life to us!..
(Strange thing, there’s almost nothing
entering the room
from all the years in America.)

To Δωμάτιο
-Θυμάσαι τον τάδε;
