Work from Paros Poetry and Translation Symposium 2014: Helen Dimos

[excerpt from “Certain Kinds of Danger”]

It’s true
when there is no one to look at you with love
you are in danger.

What does the look give?

We are loved.
Here is the body who loves
shield against all who do not
it becomes something other than
love
I can do anything as long as there is
this one
of whom
I am assured.
(I must die first.) (I must live forever.)

[excerpt from “A Cord of Voice”]

Keep starting conversations with you inside my head
command myself to let them go

When I find out we’re talking to each other without knowing it

      something blooms in my neck

without willing it

I turn my face to the side

Helen Dimos

NOTE: The translations below are works-in-progress

Τι δίνει το κοίταγμα;
