Work from Paros Poetry and Translation Symposium 2019: Lina Tsoukala
Death and the Cargo Ship
he came and left dead
animals in the house
I unlatched the closets,
peered under the bed,
behind the doors:
only hidden
bones of lamb
jaws and bone-slivers.
what does he want?
who is calling him?
who is the augurer?
at night
with their eyes closed
the Caucasus stoop over
the bones over
the shoulder blade and
weep bitter rust.
