NOTE: The translation below is a work-in-progress

Properties and fears

I’ve got thinning gray hair
a gaze to the past
also the voices of people who are vanishing.
I’ve got promises and spurious expectations
properties borrowed from summers past.
I always sleep with my clothes on
ready to run
when old age suddenly awakes me.
In my bed, next to me, I’ve got my first exercise book
when I was learning unwittingly to read.
On the yellowing pages
the teacher’s stern remarks.
Now, forty years later,
in spite of all my tears,
I remain illiterate…

I’ve got thick-growing gray dreams
a gaze afraid of the future
a smile that succumbs to the tyrannical rain
and also, the thundering march of time.
I always sleep
in the luxurious suit of self delusion
that—finally—one day I will learn to read.
And when I wake up,
dazed in the haze of my night wanderings
among vowels and consonants that remained unsaid
mechanically stepping toward the painful chamber of forgetfulness
I feel my sole companion following me: The fear
that, since I never got properly educated when little
I’ll never learn to write
the language of dreams…
